Zambia is celebrating the remarkable achievements of women entrepreneurs who are challenging societal norms, driving economic growth, and redefining the future of business. Despite facing barriers such as limited access to capital, market constraints, and gender biases, women-led enterprises continue to thrive, setting new benchmarks for success and proving that inclusivity in business is a powerful force for economic transformation.

Ruth Chande Ironside: Leading Zambia’s Sustainable Forestry Revolution

Among these trailblazers is Ruth Chande Ironside, the founder and CEO of Mupapa Wood Limited, a company that is not only profitable but also committed to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Ruth’s passion for nature and sustainable forestry has translated into a thriving business model that balances profitability with social and environmental responsibility.

From humble beginnings with just 18 employees, Mupapa Wood has grown into a company employing 42 workers, demonstrating the strength and viability of Ruth’s vision. The company is a shining example of how sustainable practices can drive business success while positively impacting communities.

Breaking Barriers: Women Entrepreneurs Can Lead

As a woman leading in a male-dominated industry, Ruth believes that women are just as capable as men in running successful businesses.

“We often have to work harder to prove ourselves, but our accomplishments speak volumes,” she says.

Her leadership embodies the innovation, resilience, and commitment to long-term solutions that women entrepreneurs bring to the business world.

Despite challenges, Ruth refuses to be discouraged, seeing obstacles as opportunities for growth.

“The journey to success isn’t easy for anyone, but women face unique challenges that require extra perseverance. Yet, every challenge motivates me to push forward,” she shares.

This unwavering determination has propelled Mupapa Wood into a leading force in Zambia’s forestry sector, reinforcing the belief that women-led businesses are key drivers of economic development.

Sustainability at the Core of Business Growth

At the heart of Ruth’s business is her deep commitment to environmental conservation.

“As women, we have an inherent connection to nature, and it’s crucial that we take an active role in safeguarding our planet,” she asserts.

Mupapa Wood prioritizes eco-friendly practices that promote sustainable forestry while generating employment opportunities for local communities.

“When I think back, it’s been a whirlwind. We started with just 18 employees, and now we’re 42. There’s been nothing easy about this path, but every achievement proves that women can lead successful enterprises.”

Her company’s remarkable growth and commitment to sustainability serve as an inspiration to aspiring women entrepreneurs and business leaders across Africa.

The Need for Greater Support for Women in Business

Despite the increasing success of women-led businesses, challenges such as limited access to financing and market opportunities persist. Ruth emphasizes that for Zambia to fully unlock its economic potential, these barriers must be addressed.

“Women in business are proving their worth every day. What’s needed now is greater support from financial institutions and policymakers,” she urges.

From Recognition to Action: What’s Next for Women Entrepreneurs?

As Zambia celebrates Women’s Day and acknowledges the incredible strides made by women entrepreneurs, it is crucial to move beyond recognition and towards tangible action.

Supporting women entrepreneurs is not just about gender equality—it’s about unleashing the full economic potential of the nation. Studies show that countries with higher female participation in business and leadership experience faster economic growth【1】.

The question remains:
Will stakeholders take the necessary steps to empower the next generation of women leaders?

Zambia’s future depends on inclusive policies, access to funding, and a business environment that nurtures women entrepreneurs.

As Ruth’s story proves, when women succeed, communities thrive, industries grow, and nations prosper.
