TipsNews USA Calls for Immediate, Independent Investigation into Alleged Threats Against SOKAPU President
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI / ABUJA — August 17, 2026
TipsNews has reviewed a formal petition submitted by the National President of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Associations (SOKAPU), Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, to Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), concerning allegations of criminal intimidation, threats to life and abuse of office.
The petition states that following SOKAPU’s fundamental-rights enforcement action before the High Court of Kaduna State concerning the death of 26-year-old Mary Habila, Kato received an alleged telephone call and subsequent WhatsApp communication attributed to Senator David Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works. The petition reproduces the alleged statements and includes a screenshot of the subsequent WhatsApp communication.
TipsNews makes no finding of guilt against Senator Umahi. The allegations remain allegations and must be independently investigated and tested through the appropriate legal process.
But that is precisely the point:
WHY SHOULD ANYONE BE AFRAID OF QUESTIONS?
What is wrong with asking questions?
What is wrong with seeking an independent investigation?
What is wrong with going to court?
What is wrong with asking competent authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding a questionable death?
Nothing.
These are legitimate functions of citizens, civil-society organisations, the media and the courts in a constitutional democracy.
According to the petition, SOKAPU instituted legal proceedings seeking judicial intervention for a transparent and independent forensic autopsy and comprehensive police investigation into the death of Mary Habila.
The proper response to questions is evidence—not intimidation.
The proper response to litigation is legal representation—not threats.
The proper response to controversy is investigation—not suppression.
THE ALLEGED THREATS MUST BE INVESTIGATED
The petition states that on July 28, 2026, at approximately 9:39 a.m., Kato received a telephone call from a person he identified as Senator David Umahi, during which he alleges that threatening language was used against him.
The petition further states that at approximately 10:53 p.m. that same day, a WhatsApp message was received from the contact identified as Nweze David Umahi, containing further language that Kato regarded as threatening and intimidating. A screenshot of that communication is included in the submitted petition.
These are serious allegations.
They should neither be dismissed because the accused person is politically powerful nor treated as proven simply because they appear in a petition.
They should be investigated.
That is what the rule of law is designed to accomplish.
NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW
TipsNews respectfully calls upon Nigeria’s law-enforcement and judicial institutions to allow the law to take its full and independent course.
If the allegations are false, an impartial investigation can establish that.
If the allegations are true, the law should equally establish accountability.
Either way, the answer is investigation.
No minister should be above investigation.
No civil-society leader should be above the law.
No journalist should be above the law.
No citizen should be above the law.
And no institution should be permitted to use its authority to prevent legitimate questions from being asked.
No one is above the law.
LET THE RULE OF LAW WORK
The DSS petition itself requests an immediate investigation into the alleged threat to Kato’s life and safety, accountability for the alleged conduct, and appropriate security protection for him and those potentially affected.
TipsNews therefore urges the relevant Nigerian authorities to:
- Receive and professionally investigate the allegations.
- Preserve relevant telephone, WhatsApp and other digital evidence.
- Interview all relevant parties and witnesses.
- Determine the authenticity and context of the communications.
- Protect any person facing a credible security threat.
- Allow the courts to determine matters properly before them.
- Prevent political influence or intimidation from interfering with lawful investigations.
- Provide appropriate public accountability without compromising legitimate investigations.
This is not about taking sides.
It is about taking the law seriously.
CANDIDO — THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK
There is an enduring lesson in the expression “Candido—the man behind the mask.”
Appearances are not always the whole story.
Where serious questions remain unanswered, responsible journalism must continue looking beyond the surface—not to manufacture guilt, but to pursue facts.
TipsNews intends to do exactly that.
We will continue making responsible efforts to bring this matter to the attention of the Western world, international media, human-rights organisations, democratic institutions and appropriate international bodies, so that the concerns raised can receive legitimate international scrutiny and, where warranted, appropriate action within their respective mandates.
This is not an invitation for foreign governments or international organisations to prejudge a Nigerian citizen.
It is a call for international visibility, independent observation and accountability consistent with the rule of law and universally recognised human rights principles.
Nigeria should not fear legitimate international scrutiny.
A country confident in its institutions should be able to say:
Investigate us. Examine the evidence. Hear every side. Let justice prevail.
THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IS WATCHING
No case is too small when fundamental principles are involved.
The international community increasingly pays attention to matters involving:
- Freedom of speech and expression;
- Freedom of information;
- Protection of journalists and civil society;
- Threats and intimidation;
- Abuse or alleged abuse of public office;
- Access to justice;
- Independent investigations;
- Protection of witnesses and complainants;
- Due process and judicial independence; and
- The equal application of the law.
Nigeria’s democratic reputation is strengthened—not weakened—when difficult allegations are confronted openly and lawfully.
There must be no omissions.
There must be no convenient oversights.
There must be no intimidation.
There must be no interference.
THE RENEWED HOPE AGENDA MUST RENEW CONFIDENCE IN JUSTICE
The Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda should extend beyond economic development and infrastructure.
Renewed hope must also mean that Nigerians can have confidence in their institutions.
A family seeking answers about a death should have confidence in an investigation.
A citizen who approaches a court should not fear retaliation.
A civil-society organisation should be able to raise legitimate concerns.
A journalist should be able to ask difficult questions.
And a public official should be confident enough in the strength of the law to allow an allegation to be tested through due process.
That is what renewed hope should look like in a constitutional democracy.
TIPSNEWS WILL NOT LOOK AWAY
TipsNews is not a court.
TipsNews will not convict anyone.
TipsNews will not substitute journalism for investigation.
But neither will TipsNews look away when serious allegations are formally presented to Nigeria’s security institutions and supported by documentary and digital material requiring proper examination.
We will continue to report responsibly.
We will continue to ask legitimate questions.
We will continue to distinguish allegations from established facts.
We will continue to seek responses from all relevant parties.
And we will continue bringing matters of legitimate public interest to the attention of the wider international community.
Because silence is not justice.
Intimidation is not justice.
Political influence is not justice.
Only a fair, independent and lawful process can establish the truth.
LET THE INVESTIGATION BEGIN.
LET THE EVIDENCE SPEAK.
LET THE COURTS DO THEIR WORK.
LET THE RULE OF LAW PREVAIL.
No one is above the law.
