2025 Top NGOs in Africa: Leading the Charge for Sustainable Development

By Francis John, Executive Director, HOPe Africa

In many parts of rural Africa, young girls and women are forced to make difficult and heartbreaking choices during their monthly menstrual cycle. They are left to resort to using unhygienic materials like rags, leaves, or even old newspapers as alternatives to sanitary pads—solutions that carry significant health risks and foster feelings of shame. The lack of access to sanitary products is a persistent problem, contributing to widespread period poverty and driving girls away from school, sometimes permanently.

The PadAid Campaign was born out of a pressing need to address this crisis. We aim to collect and distribute 10 million sanitary pads to girls and women in rural Africa, ensuring that no girl ever has to miss school or jeopardize her health because of her period. But we cannot do it alone.

This is a call to partners, donors, humanitarian organizations, and every compassionate individual to join forces with us. Together, we can break the silence surrounding menstrual health and ensure that no girl is left behind.

The Reality of Period Poverty

The statistics are staggering. Across Africa, millions of girls miss school each year due to their inability to manage their periods safely and hygienically. In sub-Saharan Africa, around 1 in 10 girls will miss school during her menstrual cycle, leading to 5-6 days of missed education each month. That adds up to 60-70 days of school lost every year. For many, this disruption is enough to lead to dropping out of school entirely.

When a girl misses school because of her period, the consequences go beyond academics. She becomes more vulnerable to early marriage, exploitation, and manipulation by men who offer sanitary pads in exchange for favors. This is unacceptable. No girl should have to make such painful sacrifices for something as natural as menstruation.

Infections are also common due to the use of unsanitary materials, placing girls at risk for serious health issues, including reproductive tract infections and other long-term complications. This is a public health crisis that demands urgent attention.

PadAid’s Mission: 10 Million Pads, 10 Million Lives Changed

At HOPe Africa, we believe in solutions that empower girls and protect their health and dignity. Our PadAid Campaign sets out to collect and distribute 10 million sanitary pads to rural communities across Africa, starting with the regions in greatest need.

This project isn’t just about providing pads. It’s about:

Keeping girls in school: Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and girls who remain in school are more likely to lead empowered, independent lives.

Protecting health: With proper menstrual products, girls no longer have to risk infections or other serious health issues.

Restoring dignity: No girl should feel ashamed or isolated because of her period. By providing sanitary pads, we give girls the tools they need to manage their periods with dignity and confidence.

How You Can Help

We are asking for your support to meet the growing and ongoing demand for sanitary pads. Here’s how you can contribute:

1. Donate Funds: Even a small amount can make a huge difference. A donation of just $20 can provide sanitary pads for three girls for an entire year. Larger contributions can help us reach thousands of girls in need. Your donations go directly toward purchasing and distributing pads to the hardest-to-reach areas.

2. Corporate Partnerships: If you’re part of a business, consider partnering with us to provide bulk donations or corporate sponsorships. Every dollar, every pad helps us get closer to our goal of reaching 10 million girls.

3. In-Kind Donations: We welcome donations of sanitary pads, logistical support, or warehouse space. HOPe Africa can arrange for immediate pickup of donations within the U.S., or they can be dropped off at our warehouse in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Please contact us at community@hopeafricaintl.org for more details.

4. Volunteer Support: Volunteers are the backbone of this campaign. We are looking for 100 volunteers in the U.S. and 50 in Africa to assist with collecting, sorting, and distributing sanitary pads. Your time and commitment could change the future of hundreds of girls.

5. Advocacy and Awareness: Help us spread the word! Share this campaign with your network, talk to friends and family, and let’s create a viral movement to end period poverty in Africa.

The Power of Education and Empowerment

Research shows that for every year a girl stays in school, her future earnings increase by 10-20%. She is more likely to have healthier children and more likely to send those children to school. Educating girls is one of the most effective ways to build stronger families, communities, and economies.

We need your help to make this a reality. By supporting the PadAid Campaign, you are giving girls the chance to stay in school, protect their health, and break the cycle of poverty.

Join the Movement: Every Pad Counts!

Together, we can create a future where no girl is left behind because of her period. Help us reach our goal of collecting 10 million sanitary pads and give these girls a chance to live healthier, more dignified lives.

Donate Today! No amount is too small, and every contribution brings us closer to making a difference.

Together, we can ensure that every girl has access to the education, health, and dignity she deserves.
