Nigeria Needs Mandatory Crisis Reporting and Unified Engagement to Restore Trust and Sovereignty

n recent years, Nigeria has been gripped by a relentless wave of violence: insurgencies, banditry, terrorism, kidnappings, and politically fueled unrest. While the courage of Nigeria’s security forces is commendable, the lack of unified and transparent crisis communication has resulted in widespread public mistrust and unchecked misinformation.
The time has come for Nigeria to implement a Mandatory Engagement and Crisis Reporting Framework that ensures real-time updates, accountability, and transparency during every major incident threatening our national security.
This system must include mandatory reporting within 24 hours of any critical event, with inter-agency representation on site: traditional rulers, press, DSS, Police, Army, Navy, Fire Services, EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA, NAF, NIS, Correctional Services, local and state officials. Only through coordinated, unified response efforts can we foster public trust, discourage fake news, and show that no individual or agency is above the rule of law.
The Power of Truthful Visibility In 2024, Nigeria served as a case study in crisis mismanagement as multiple terrorist and kidnapping incidents went underreported or inconsistently handled, leading to public outrage. Contrast this with countries like New Zealand or Finland, where timely press conferences, open-source data, and multi-agency response teams have strengthened trust between citizens and the state.
Our recommendation is clear:
- Mandate 24-hour reporting of national security incidents
- Create a joint task force of federal and local representatives
- Train journalists and officials in crisis communication and digital literacy
- Keep emergency phone lines functional and tested monthly
Every Nigerian life matters — whether in Sokoto or in the diaspora. True sovereignty requires honest, swift, and all-inclusive response systems. We cannot let silence or disjointed responses define our nation’s future.
