Municipal Water Supply and Revival of Ojirami Dam Will Be a Priority – Sen. Okpebholo, APC Candidate

Igarra, Edo State – The Akoko-Edo Development Association, also known as Akoko-Edo Forum, hosted Senator Monday Okpebholo in a one-hour session at the “Meet the Candidates” series on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

The event provided the APC candidate a platform to engage with Akoko-Edo’s critical stakeholders and present his vision for the Local Government Area (LGA), addressing concerns of perceived marginalization.

Sen. Okpebholo emphasized his deep connection with rural areas like many parts of Akoko-Edo and his commitment to serving the people. He outlined three key priorities if elected: security, healthcare, and water supply.

“I see a lot of potential and many things can be done in Akoko-Edo,” said Okpebholo. He also highlighted the vast mineral resources in the area, which are ripe for investment. Sharing his personal experiences, he expressed his affinity with Akoko-Edo, stating, “I have something in common with Akoko-Edo, which is a distance of 15-20 minutes from my place.” He promised an inclusive government, ensuring equal treatment for all parts of the state.

Okpebholo also mentioned his role in helping Dr. Philip Ugbodaga become the first medical director of the newly established Federal Orthopedic Hospital, Benin. He acknowledged that no Akoko-Edo person has ever been appointed as a Federal Permanent Secretary, Ambassador, or Chairman of any board or commission since the inception of the 4th Republic.

Addressing the need to split Akoko-Edo for better development, he initially stated that creating Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) from Akoko-Edo “will not happen under my watch.” However, he later conceded that if such a move would benefit the area, he would consider it based on the findings of a committee he plans to establish to gather input from the local populace.

On healthcare, Okpebholo pledged to ensure each ward has at least one primary health center, renovate existing General Hospitals, and equip them with laboratories. He also promised incentives for medical professionals to attract them to the area and the state at large. “I will allow local government councils and Health Management Boards to operate freely,” he said.

Okpebholo underscored his commitment to tourism, recognizing the potential in places like Ososo, Lampese, and Igarra. He pledged to invest in these areas to boost tourism and relaxation. However, he highlighted security as a critical issue, crucial for both tourism and farming. “Security will be at the top of my focus so that tourism can thrive and people can go to farms,” he stated, though he declined to share specific security plans due to their confidential nature.

Reviving the Ojirami Dam for water supply to the LGA is one of his primary focuses, although the specifics of this plan remain unclear.

Regarding the School of Mining and Geology signed into law by the Buhari administration, Okpebholo admitted he was unaware of the bill but promised to follow up with the National Assembly’s Clerk. The need for a state higher institution in the LGA, as promised by other candidates, was not addressed.

The session concluded with participants urging Okpebholo to engage more with Akoko-Edo residents to better understand their needs. They emphasized the importance of inclusivity beyond APC loyalty and advised him to seek honest feedback if elected.

Sen. Okpebholo assured the attendees of his commitment to visiting Akoko-Edo in the coming days.
