A powerful story of faith, development, and cross-cultural partnership bridging the U.S. and Africa.

In a heartfelt celebration of faith and humanity, Byron Whetstone, President of Heartland International Ministry (HIM) based in Kansas City, Missouri, has been honored with a prestigious traditional chieftaincy title in Nigeria for his extraordinary service to community empowerment and spiritual growth.

Conferred by His Royal Highness Sir Ishaku Yari (Sa-Gbagyi I), the Etsu Chikun and paramount ruler of the Gbagyi Kingdom in Kaduna State, the title “Kpasi”, meaning “Shining Star,” symbolizes hope, leadership, and enduring friendship between the American and Nigerian people.

“The Kingdom of Gbagyi has recognized the great works of Heartland International Ministry,” declared Etsu Chikun. “Mr. Whetstone has empowered our youth, provided clean water, and shared faith with integrity. He has truly become a shining light among us.”

Faith in Action: Building Bridges Across Continents

For years, Heartland International Ministry has worked across northern Nigeria, advancing education, clean water access, vocational skills training, and spiritual development.

In his acceptance speech, Whetstone expressed humility and renewed dedication:

“It’s an extraordinary and humbling experience to be honored in Nigeria by such a distinguished king,” he said. “Now that I’m an honorary chief, I feel even more responsible to serve, develop, and uplift the people of Gbagyi land.”

His wife, Mrs. Jerri Whetstone, on her first trip to Nigeria, said the experience was “transformative and unforgettable.”

Diaspora Leaders and Global Voices Applaud

The investiture drew applause from across the global diaspora, highlighting the growing network of international advocates working toward sustainable African development.

Freud Musanu, President of the Zambia Diaspora Chamber of Commerce (ZDCC) in Kansas City, praised Whetstone as “a humanitarian bridge between continents.”

“Chief Whetstone’s recognition is a victory for faith-based global collaboration,” Musanu noted. “He represents the power of compassion and commitment in reshaping communities.”

William John, CEO of HOPe Care Services United Kingdom, emphasized partnership as the heart of true progress:

“What we see in the Whetstones is the embodiment of sustainable leadership — service before self,” he said.

Patrice Ndidi Key, President of the Nigeria in Diaspora Chamber of Commerce (NIDCC) in Washington D.C., added:

“This is exactly the kind of story CNN, BBC, and The Washington Post should share — proof that unity and purpose can bridge nations.”

From the creative community, Artist NYcee of KuliKuli Entertainment USA celebrated the honor with enthusiasm:

“Chief Whetstone is an example of global impact through faith. His work in Nigeria will inspire generations.”

Faith, Family, and Future: The Spirit of Partnership

Rev. Dr. Sam Magai Albert, Country Director of HIM Nigeria, reflected with pride and humor:

“Back home, we have the Kansas City Chiefs — now we have our own Chief right here in Nigeria!”

He emphasized that the chieftaincy is not a ceremonial gesture but a “spiritual and moral call to continue the work.”

Under his leadership, HIM plans to expand its vocational centers, clean-water projects, and health initiatives throughout Kaduna State and beyond.

Unsung Heroes Behind the Mission

The success of this mission also honors the dedication of unsung contributors including Mr. Samuel Nongo and Mallam Mamud Adamu, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure each project — and the ceremony itself — was a resounding success.

Their quiet service embodies the heart of community building — the kind of grassroots leadership that drives enduring transformation.

From Kansas City to Kaduna — A Legacy of Love and Service

“It represents not just one man’s honor, but the power of partnership between America and Africa — proof that love, purpose, and service can still change the world.”
