A “Gift of Love” for 1,000 Kansas City Residents: 13th Annual Giveaway Distributes Unprecedented Variety of Goods

KANSAS CITY, MO – December 20, 2025 – The American Jazz Museum was transformed into a bustling hub of holiday hope this past Saturday as the 13th Annual Gift of Love Toy Giveaway served approximately 1,000 community members. The event, successfully organized by a coalition including HOPe Africa International, KCOG (Keeping Communities On Guard), OLD SCHOOL All School, and the National Historic Soul Jazz Blues Walker Foundation Inc., surpassed all previous years by distributing not just toys, but a vast array of essential household goods, marking its 11th year as a cornerstone of Kansas City holiday support.

Fueled by sponsors like HOPe Africa, Toys for Tots, Price Chopper, and Happy Foods, this year’s effort was distinguished by its incredible diversity and volume of donations. For the first time, organizers confirmed that they “not only received the most toys but also had enough for families and friends” to receive a wide spectrum of items.

An Unprecedented Inventory of Care

Moving far beyond toys, the giveaway featured an expansive inventory addressing nearly every household need, including:

  • Home Essentials: Blankets, pillows, bedsheets, bathroom mats, carpets, air purifiers, photo frames, and furniture.
  • Kitchen & Household: Food processors, pots, pans, cutlery, knives, cups, paper towels, tissues, disposable dishes, and cleaning gloves.
  • Clothing & Personal Care: Clothing, shoes, briefs, sanitary pads, baby pads, and car seats.
  • Health & Wellness: Treadmills, exercise machines, leg massagers, weight balancing equipment, walkers, and helmets.
  • Electronics & Toys: Computers and accessories, keyboards, toys, games, soccer and basketballs.
  • Food & Sundries: Dog and cat food, chips, snacks, cookies, water, and soft drinks.

“This is the 11th year our groups have hosted this event, and we are overwhelmed by the community’s need and generosity,” said a lead organizer. “To see families leaving with more than five items, their bags full, and knowing these are expensive, new items offered totally free—it’s why we do this. It’s a great place to be at this time of the year when things are very hard.”

A Well-Documented Community Triumph

The massive, well-attended event garnered significant media attention, highlighting its importance to the city. Alan Shope, a reporter from KMBC 9 News, was on-site capturing stories of impact, while TipsNews.info provided extensive coverage of the day’s joyful exchanges.

Operational compassion was a hallmark. Volunteers provided bags and direct assistance, carrying donations to vehicles for elderly and overwhelmed attendees. The provision of snacks, chips, and drinks kept energy and spirits high throughout the afternoon.

Honoring a Decade of Partnership

The overwhelming success served as a powerful testament to HOPe Africa’s role. KCOG and partner organizations publicly praised HOPe Africa for its spectacular support and services to the community over the past decade, reiterating their commitment to future collaboration. The previously announced “Certificate of Best Performance” formalizes this gratitude, as does the coalition’s support for HOPe Africa’s goal of securing a permanent headquarters to expand this vital work.

“Some attendees confirmed these are expensive new stuff offered for totally free,” noted Lisa Walker-Yeager of the NHSJB Walker Foundation. “In a time when many families are struggling to make ends meet, this ‘Gift of Love’ is a tangible message that they are not alone.”
