Healing the Vulnerable: The Humane Dynamic of Senator Katung

The most revealing moment of Senator Katung’s tenure may not have occurred in the Senate chambers. It may have occurred in an under-equipped primary healthcare centre in Samaru Kataf, where nurses who had been turning away pregnant women for lack of basic supplies hugged him.

That embrace—between the powerful and the vulnerable—captures what we call his “humane dynamic.” It is a leadership style that is at once personal and collective.

Worried by decaying health infrastructure, Katung entered a historic 5-year partnership with Project C.U.R.E, USA. The agreement, announced in February 2026, will bring over N8 Billion worth of modern medical equipment to 10 General Hospitals across Southern Kaduna. Each container contains medical equipment valued at approximately $500,000, with a minimum of 11 containers—totaling $5.5 million—to be delivered within three to six months . The Team Lead for Project CURE, Rose Polycarp, confirmed the commitment and commended the senator for facilitating the collaboration .

He launched “Project 365” to screen and eliminate viral hepatitis. He rehabilitated the Fadan Ninzo Rural Hospital and Maternity Centre in Sanga LGA, facilitated drugs for Primary Health Centres in Jaba LGA, and is building a new Primary Health Centre in Ghauta, Jema’a LGA . He sunk over 300 hand-pump boreholes and lit up Southern Kaduna with over 5,000 solar-powered streetlights. He distributed 10,000 bags of fertilizer to farmers and trained over 200 farmers in modern ginger processing .

His open-door policy and 24/7 accessibility mean that no constituent is turned away. He appointed a Special Adviser on Muslim Matters—the first in the district’s history—proving that diversity is a foundation for unity. He awarded full scholarships to five students of Bethel Baptist High School, Kaduna, who were victims of the 2021 kidnapping, covering their education from secondary school through tertiary level.

This is leadership that heals. This is leadership that includes. This is the leadership that Kaduna South deserves to keep.

KDSS invites Kaduna indigenes across the world—professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, and philanthropists—to join its consortium. By pooling resources, expertise, and networks, the diaspora can play a transformative role in Kaduna’s development journey. KDSS provides the framework; the collective effort of Kaduna’s global community provides the power.
